People often ask me if I ever get tired of traveling, driving, flying, or staying in hotel rooms. In a typical year, I generally tour to about seven states in the US and, on occasion, several other countries. Because I work fairs, festivals, and amusement parks, I present multiple shows a day, equating to between three hundred and four hundred performances a year. It has been said that entertainers “get paid for the travel and do the show for free,” and there’s a lot of truth to that. Some years I stay in hotel rooms almost as many days as I am at home. For many entertainers, the road wears them down, and some end up with substance-abuse issues that destroy their careers. Life on the road is not for the timid—it takes devotion to a dream and endless patience. Having said all of that, I personally look forward to traveling. I sometimes even drive eight hundred miles overnight from one gig to another.

One of the reasons I enjoy traveling is that my parents, Clarence and Freda, took me on many trips when I was younger. In fact, I first flew when I was just one year old, and in the 1950s, flights were long and sometimes very bumpy in the old prop airplanes. My mom told me that on that first flight, my dad got airsick to the point that we had to deboard the plane at one of the connecting airports and eventually finish our flight on a postal airplane. My dad also really enjoyed driving, so we spent a lot of time on the road. I’m sure that’s why I still love traveling down a long stretch of highway on new adventures.

Ghost hunting has been a great stress-management tool for me on the road and has helped me avoid the negative aspects to which many of my fellow entertainers have sadly fallen victim. In addition, my investigations have taken me to places I would have never gone and experiences I would never have had otherwise. On a typical performance night, when I get done with my shows, I can usually find a possibly haunted location to explore near my hotel. After shows, entertainers are, in a word, “wired,” and so need to find a way to wind down. Ghost hunting and otherwise exploring the unknown are my release, and never get old.

Both North and South Dakota are wonderful, friendly states to visit. I regularly perform at the Central States Fair in Rapid City, South Dakota, and I have also performed at both the North and South Dakota State Fairs. The great bandleader Lawrence Welk was born in Strasburg, North Dakota; I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with several of the Welk stars, including Bobby Burgess and Ralna English. Welk was a pioneer in the syndication of TV shows and in casting both Black and Hispanic performers. Of course, there are many amazing sites to see in the Dakotas, in particular in the Rapid City area:
